The Importance of Bread
We all take our daily bread for granted – it is a natural part of most of our daily diets and few of us can resist the smell of freshly baked bread. Bread is one of the most versatile foods we know, in fact it is probably “the ultimate convenience food” as it is easy to prepare and comes in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit all needs.
Like other Carbohydrates such as pasta, rice, potatoes and pulses, bread is a valuable source of starch, fibre, vitamins and minerals, and it is low in fat as well as being filling so it can satisfy your appetite.
Despite changes in our diets, bread has maintained its position as a favourite snack with Irish families and remains top of the shopping list.
Many people tend to think that bread is a fattening food but it is the spreads that are used that add on the calories.
In fact, filling up on bread makes us less likely to reach for a bar of chocolate or packet of crisps!
