Traditional Breads

Traditional Irish bread – commonly known as “Brown Bread”

Brown Soda Breads are moulded into round shapes and decorative crosses are used to enhance flavour and ensure even baking. Some are baked on greased and floured baking sheets, while others are baked in loaf tins. A few are baked in casseroles with lids – the most traditional method of all as it is the closest to the old style. This everyday Irish bread was traditionally baked in a cast iron pot set over the embers of an open fire. With a cake-like texture, this bread is made without yeast and is best eaten on the day it is baked. Brown bread remains very popular throughout Ireland because it is easy and quick to bake. Often it is baked fresh for breakfast or for tea. It is made on a daily basis by people all over Ireland who don’t need to follow any recipe after so many years of practice!
